OB-GYN Providers

Our doctors and staff are committed to your obstetrics and gynecology needs. Most of our staff members have been with OB-GYN Services for many years and we take pride in our long term relationships with our patients and their families. OB-GYN Services consist of nine physicians, three nurse practitioners, and two licensed nurse midwives.

We routinely provide the following women's health services:

Pelvic exam • Pap smear • Colposcopy • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) • Ultrasound • Prenatal care • Normal & high-risk delivery

David Kalla, MD

Dr. Kalla earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Brown University in 1979 and his medical degree from the University School of Medicine in 1983. He was awarded the Sara & David Weis Fellowship in Cardiovascular Research at Montefiore Hospital in 1980. Dr. Kalla completed his residency at the University of Connecticut in 1987. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Connecticut State Medical Society, and serves as a representative for the New London County Medical Society.

Dr. Kalla has been with OBGYN Services and on staff at Backus Hospital since 1987, serving as President of the Medical Staff from 2002 to 2014 and Chief of Surgery from 2007 to 2019. He is currently the Medical Director for Women's Health in Hartford Healthcare's Eastern Region. Dr. Kalla is also a Clinical Assistant Instructor at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Bridgeport Physician Assistant Institute.

Dr. Kalla serves on the Board of Trustees at Norwich Free Academy, where he has been a chair since 2022. He enjoys golf, skiing, pickleball, and spending time with his grandchildren.

 

Suzelle Hendsch, MD

Dr. Hendsch graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in mechanical engineering. She then continued on to receive her doctorate from Boston University in 1993. Dr. Hendsch went on to complete her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield Massachusettes in 2001. She has been with OBGYN Services since 2001.

Dr. Hendsch has been featured as a "Top Doc" in Connecticut Magazine the past four years, and has been a Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2014. In her free time she enjoys cycling, swimming, and hiking with her dog Joey.

 

Melissa Welch, MD

Melissa-Welch.jpgDr. Welch received a Bachelors of Science in Biology from Yale University in New Haven, CT, in 1992. Dr. Welch received her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in New York, NY, in 1999. During this time she did an AMSA International Language and Culture Summer Fellowship in Mexico. Dr. Welch completed her residency at Brown University at Women’s and Infants Hospital in Providence, RI, receiving the Berlex Award for Top Resident Teacher of the Year (2001) and a Resident Excellence Teaching Pin (1999-2001). She has volunteered at the Rape Crisis Center and Planned Parenthood and speaks some Spanish in addition to English. 

Dr. Welch has been at OBGYN Services since 2003 and is Board Certified.  She is from southeastern CT and grew up in Mystic. In her free time she enjoys cooking, music, and beekeeping.

Matthew Brown, MD

Matthew-Brown.jpgDr. Brown received a Bachelors of Science in Genetics and Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University in 1995 and his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX, in 2000. He completed his internship and residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA, where he received the Berlex Laboratories Teaching Resident of the Year (2002) and Pfizer OB/GYN Resident Scholarship (2003). He was Administrative OB/GYN Chief Resident from 2003 – 2004. From 2004 through 2007 he served at the US Naval Hospitals in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Charleston, SC, receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Medal of Commendation (2005). Dr. Brown has been with OBGYN Services since 2007. He is Board Certified and serves on various committees at Backus Hospital.

Julie Belcher, MD

Julie-Belcher.jpgDr. Belcher is originally from Granby, Connecticut.  She received a Bachelors of Arts in Economics from Williams College in Williamstown, MA, graduating cum laude.  She received her Doctor of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, ranking in the top third of her class and received the Sarah G. Miller Obstetrics and Gynecology Prize in OB/GYN.  She completed her residency at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.  During this period she was Resident Physician of the Year in 2008 and Administrative Chief Resident from 2007-2008.  She belongs to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has been with OBGYN Services since 2008.

Dr. Belcher is married and has two children.  In her free time she enjoys reading, cooking, and hiking. 

Kellen Sikora, MD

DrKellen-Sikora.jpgDr. Sikora received a Bachelor’s of Ars in Biology from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, graduating magna cum laude. She continued on to receive her medical degree from Rush University School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. Dr. Sikora then completed her residency at the University of Connecticut receiving the Dr. Spero Neckles Award for Outstanding Resident Research (2014) and the Dorian Award for Excellence in Patient Care (2015). 

Dr. Sikora is a board certified fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a community associate professor for the University of Connecticut medical school and residency program. She is also AUIM certified for obstetric and gynecological ultrasound. Dr. Sikora has been with OBGYN Services since 2015.

In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her children, traveling, and expanding her library.

Lindsey Ellis, MD

Dr. Lindsey Ellis joined the OBGYN Services team in 2024. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Missouri, graduating Cum Laude, and her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 2020. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Missouri, where she served as Administrative Chief Resident and received several prestigious awards, including the Society of Laparoscopic & Robotic Surgeons Resident Achievement Award and the MU Health Care YES Moment award.

Dr. Ellis is passionate about women’s health, particularly obstetrics and surgery, and has been involved in leadership with ACOG for five years, advocating for women’s health in Washington, D.C. She is an active member of ACOG and holds the position of District I Junior Fellows Meetings Chair.

 Outside of work, she takes Pilates classes several times per week, enjoys trying new restaurants, and loves catching up with both old and new friends.

Zung Hoang, MD

Dr. Zung Hoang joined the OBGYN Services team in 2024. She earned her Medical Doctorate from Pham Ngoc Thach University in Vietnam in 1997 and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Limoges in France in 2000. Dr. Hoang then pursued a Master of Public Health at Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at CUNY. After passing the U.S. Medical Licensing Exams, she completed another residency at Jamaica Hospital in 2013. She has since practiced in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Dr. Hoang is passionate about bringing healthy babies into the world and providing culturally sensitive care, drawing on her experiences abroad. She has received numerous accolades, including the Resident Achievement Award and the Award for Excellence in Female Pelvic Medicine. Dr. Hoang is an active member of ACOG, AIUM, and AAGL.

She enjoys spending time with her son and family, swimming, walking by the water, hiking, biking, and playing ping pong. She is also fluent in English, Vietnamese, and French.

Melissa Bergfeld, APRN

Melissa is an Adult and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. She graduated with honors from Yale School of Nursing, earning a Master of Science in Nursing. She also holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology from Wesleyan University. She is certified with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the National Certification Corporation. Melissa is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Society of Nursing and serves as clinical faculty for the Yale School of Nursing. She has been with OBGYN Services since 2004.

Outside of the office, Melissa enjoys yoga, cooking, knitting, reading, hiking, skiing, tennis and spending time with her husband and two boys.

 

Olivia Carson, APRN

Olivia.jpgOlivia Carson, MSN, APRN, FNP-C is a Family Nurse Practitioner. She has been a part of the OBGYN Services team since the beginning of 2021. She received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of Saint Joseph. Olivia has RN experience at Hartford Hospital as a liver and kidney transplant nurse. She also served her community as an RN at Backus Hospital in the Critical Care Unit. She earned her Masters of Science in Nursing from Purdue University Global. Olivia is certified with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Society of Nursing.

Outside of the office, Olivia enjoys exercise, traveling, and raising her children with her husband.

Grace Carver Sanfilippo, APRN

GraceCarver.jpgGrace received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT. After completing her undergraduate degree, Grace went on to complete her Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice from Columbia University in New York, NY. Grace is a Family Nurse Practitioner with a focus in Women’s Health. Grace has worked in Maternal Fetal Medicine, Obstetrics, and Gynecology; and has provided Women’s Health services in New York, Boston, and Eastern Connecticut. 

Originally from Niantic, CT, Grace relocated to Southeastern CT in 2020 and is pleased to be serving a community near and dear to her heart.


Anna Dennis, CNM, FNP

Anna joined the OBGYN Services team in 2023. Originally from Colorado, she earned her Midwifery/Family Nurse Practitioner certification from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. Anna has a strong community service background, volunteering with the Rape Response Crisis Center and Birthwell Partners' Community Doula Project in Birmingham, Alabama. She also served as Nursing Co-Director and Community Outreach Coordinator at Shade Tree Early Pregnancy Program in Nashville. Anna honed her leadership skills through the Cal Turner Program for Moral Leadership at Vanderbilt University.

Anna is honored to care for individuals during critical reproductive health moments, deeply grateful for the trust her patients place in her. Inspired by their strength, she is passionate about providing full-scope reproductive care focused on consent, shared decision-making, and patient autonomy.

 Outside of work, Anna enjoys reading, baking, hiking, camping, and cuddling her cats.
